Veterans Business Outreach Centers are regionally based information sources created just for veterans. Funded by grants from the SBA, these offices are a good place to receive technical assistance and get connected to local business resources. As of early 2010 there are eight regional VBOCs, and each offer:
- Pre-business plan workshops
- Concept assessments
- Business plan preparations
- Comprehensive feasibility analysis
- Entrepreneurial training and counseling
- Mentorship
“VBOCs are different entities, in different locations with varying years of experience,” said Richard Portis, Army veteran and coordinator of the Pittsburgh VBOC, which is located at Robert Morris University. “But we are all a primary source for veterans as it relates to entrepreneurship, providing information and educational services.”
The Pittsburgh VBOC has additional focus on veteran businesses interested in government contracting and manufacturing. It also hosts franchising seminars and produces bulletins on franchising opportunities. It serves Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
Some VBOCs are linked to Small Business Development Centers, though Pittsburgh is not at this time. “I think of us as a managed care provider, while SBDCs provide specialized care,” Portis noted.
